Philanthropy in Reno

Irene Voronel

One of the perks of running a magazine called I ♥ Reno is that I get to meet incredible people doing pretty phenomenal things to better our community. The best part of course, is telling their stories. In this issue we are honored to include the story of Big Brothers Big Sisters, an organization that changes lives of kids who lack strong mentors and support from their family, so volunteers from the community step in and help.

Proof positive that it really does take a village. We hope that after reading the stories, and seeing the photos of the children who are still waiting to be matched with a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters that you would consider volunteering your time to change a child’s life. If you are not able to volunteer, perhaps you will join Big Brothers Big Sisters at their spectacular annual fund raiser – Big Chefs Big Gala on April 8TH. There is even a chance to win tickets! Meeting the kids who have strong role models in their life with the help of Big Brothers Big Sisters truly underscores the positive in uence that is indispensable for a young child. My hope is that by spreading the word about the need for volunteers, Big Brothers Big Sisters will not have even one child on the wait list!

There are many individuals in our region who are the pillars of local philanthropy. The Dolan family are some of the biggest donors in our community and I am thrilled to include a story about some of their recent giving. I always nd it remarkable

that we are surrounded by so much generosity and sel essness. We are always looking to feature individuals who are making an impact in our town, please drop us a note if you know someone who represents the giving spirit of our community.

I am also proud to share the news about the traveling exhibit from Paris, France focusing on the Holocaust. The Hélène Berr exhibit will run during March and April at the Northwest Reno Library. This exhibit serves as a reminder of how quickly society changes from civilized to barbaric. Having lost family members to Nazi atrocities, I believe

that we are all responsible for keeping the memory of this dark moment in our (not so distant) history alive. We cannot forget or discount the gravity
of this period, doing so runs the risk of raising children in a world where hate and intolerance are normalized. It is imperative that we educate ourselves so as to ensure that the mistakes of the past are not repeated. I look forward to attending the Hélène Berr exhibit and encourage our readers to visit it as well.

I am grateful that I can play a small role in connecting our readers with some
of the events and causes that happen around town. Thank you for supporting us and the organizations we write about.

With gratitude,

Irene Voronel

PS: After the last issue was mailed, we received a ton of fan mail about Mikalee Byerman’s story regarding her thoughts on Amy Schumer’s regrettable remarks about Reno. However, somehow the

line giving credit for that story as having originally appeared in Reno’s Moms Blog did not make it into the publication. We are thrilled to have colleagues in the biz who collaborate with us. Cheers to Lynnette and crew of renomomsblog.com!
